Cyber Labs in India

What is Cyber Labs ?? -- Its the lab which is Dedicated to fight cyber crime. Now that creates a question what is Cyber Crime ???

The Oxford Reference Online defines cyber crime as crime committed over the Internet.

The Encyclopedia Britannica defines cyber crime as any crime that is committed by means of special knowledge or expert use of computer technology. So what exactly is Cyber Crime? Cyber crime could reasonably include a wide variety of criminal offences and activities.

The Internet – or Cyber Space as it s sometimes called, is a borderless environment unlike a brick and mortar world. Even though it is indispensable as a knowledge bank, it is an ideal tool for someone with a criminal bent of mind, who can use this environment to his/ her maximum advantage.

It is not a surprise that Cyber Crimes like money cyber stalking, denial of service, e-mail abuse, chat abuse and other crimes are on the rise. Cyber Terrorist and cyber mafia are emerging with great force, whose activities are going to threaten the sovereignty of nations and world order.

Karnataka got India's third cyber lab in Jan 2007. Located in the Corps of Detectives (CoD) premises of the Karnataka police, which also houses the country's first cyber crime police station, the cyber lab will be run by Nasscom.

The two cyber labs in Mumbai and Thane have in the last two-three years trained about 1,500 cops and investigators so far.

Nasscom plans to open a fourth cyber lab in Pune soon and in other cities across the country.

PopCalendarXP and Struts

Being a java developer, one might have to work on the web development. And when we talk about Web Development, we think about user interface, user input, form, dates and when we talk about dates, JavaScript Date Picker comes into play.

We all use JavaScript date picker in our web development and there are lots of javascript date picker available on the net. We just need to google it.

My recent project required to have date picker which should have pre-populated dates highlighted when user click on the Date Picker. Well there might be bunch of such java script available but what I found out was PopCalendarXP. When I looked at their homepage I found out that this is the one I wanted. So I started looking at their Tutorials, Demos and I found it very helpful.

One of the feature of PopCalendarXP is you can define your own events, holidays which will be highlighted into your date picker. Here is the link for Demos and Tutorials

One way to add events into your PopCalendar was “Retrieving agenda events from backend data source”. I was reading through that tutorial found out that they were showing the legacy system where your JSP file is being called directly from server. But thats very rare now. Very few applications might be using this way now. Most of the applications now uses Sturts or some sort of controller framework. My project is also using Struts. Also instead of using the fLoadScript() function that they defined, I used AJAX fLoadEvents() function. This is AJAX era and If I dont use it, i would feel left out. ;-).

So I changed my code a little as following.

instead of following..

var url = "/jsp/agenda.jsp?year="+y+"&month="+m;

I used

var url = "/myAjaxAction.do?action=getAjaxThingie&year="+y+"&month="+m;

The Actual work was done in Struts. In My Action Class which is mapped to myAjaxAction.do, I have something like this.

So make sure you return null as we dont want struts to forward this call to anywhere. We just need Response and write it back to our JavaScript. I hope this article helped you. Please write me back if you have any questions regarding this particular topic. I think I can help.

Indian Search Engine

So recently I was looking for an Indian Search Engine and found out that recently a new Indian Search Engine named Guruji Launched. It was founded by two Delhi IIT graduates launched the country’s first local Internet search engine, with a commitment of $7 million from a leading Indian venture capital firm.

Well thats really a nice effort. The site itself is really nice. They also have local search similar to google's local search. Its called city search. They covered around 12 cities of India. You can find out the businesses and its addresses within those cities.

So within few days I found out about Google co-op search which is basically defining your own custom search engine. I gave it a try to include Indian sites and try to mimic "Indian Search Engine". It turned out pretty nice and works pretty good (without investing $7 million :-)). I named it "Information Madness"

Give it a try.
